SHORTLIST

The Annwn Prize selection committee is excited to announce four works, celebrating excellence, storytelling and artistry. Together, we have compiled a selection that pushes the boundaries of storytelling and entertainment whilst maintaining high standards of technical proficiency and staging. The shortlist examines poignant and urgent themes such as social injustice, truth, love, and the very nature of existence. As a committee we have enjoyed the opportunity to come together to hold honest and critical conversations about the extraordinary immersive work being created by artists around the world. The collection of finalists embodies what the Annwn Prize sets out to celebrate and demonstrates the vast possibilities of the artform itself.

Consensus Gentium

Consensus Gentium (Latin: if everyone believes it, it must be true) is an innovative branching film app that watches you back. Accessible on mobile devices, it immerses audiences in a near-future society where freedoms erode under biased AI and surveillance. As the protagonist, you navigate a government Global Citizen App to visit your sick Nana - subjected to tests that measure your compliance or dissent. Using facial detection and AI, the film reads your expressions and branches in real time, creating a unique, personalised journey. Merging XR, immersive, and neuro-gaming, the experience confronts participants with urgent questions of bias, power, and trust in the digital age -placing them at the centre of a struggle for agency in a world where technology governs human interaction. ✧ "Consensus Gentium invites audiences into a participant-driven, emotionally-charged storyworld -exploring digital citizenship, agency, and surveillance -where every choice shapes a timely, interactive narrative reflecting urgent questions of our connected future." -Ellen Kuo. ✧ "Crossover Labs have had the honour of supporting Karen’s work for a number of years. We are thrilled that the other members of the shortlisting committee sought to recognise Consensus Gentium in the Annwn Prize shortlist." -Tom Millen.

NOWISWHENWEARE (the stars)

Every point in space occurs once at each moment of time. NOWISWHENWEARE (the stars) is an interactive theatrical installation that pushes this idea to its literal extreme. An unseen narrator guides each participant from complete sensory deprivation, through an individualized journey, into a precisely programmed matrix of thousands of lights – and the cosmos of themselves. Part meditation, part exploration, the stars draws visitors into a hyper-focus of the present, tracing every decision that you have ever made leading you to this precise moment. 4,000 individually reactive LEDs and a 496-channel sound system envelop each participant in an invitation to engage and become an active explorer – discovering the traces of yourself in light, the universe, and those who have been here before us. ✧ "NOWISWHENWEARE is a profoundly unique installation that oscillates between the cosmic and the everyday. Schneider takes a highly original approach to spatial storytelling through a beautifully choreographed matrix of sound and light, inviting audiences to wander and explore. The narrative contracts and expands between the intimacy of a single story into a multilayered, multilingual cacophony of voices, while the subtle presence of fellow participants creates a bond between the audience through the shared act of listening and contemplation. This spectacular work represents excellence through its precise technical virtuosity, masterful pacing, and powerful invitation to reflect on how we spend our time and the meaning we discover in everyday acts." -Samantha King

Constantinopoliad

Constantinopoliad is an expanded cinema work that gathers the audience for an act of collective reading. A response to the archive of the poet Constantine Cavafy, the story is inspired by the blank and torn out pages in “Constantinopoliad, an epic”, the journal the teenage Cavafy began when he and his family fled Alexandria; by lost and missing queer archives through time; and by the ghosts, both erotic and historical, that visit the older Cavafy in his poems. ✧ "Constaninopoliad is a spell-binding experience that invites you to slow down, listen, share, and read, as you embark on a sensual journey into the imagination of a young man, destined to become the Greek National Poet, as he explores his creative potential alongside his sexuality. The tech is minimal and unobtrusive - you hold a delicate and beautiful hand-made book, full of the magic of childhood pop-ups, that draws you in to the teenage poet’s world as you drift away to the beaches and bars of the Mediterranean at the cusp of the 20th-century, accompanied by the Nadah El Shazly’s haunting soundscapes, which blend Middle Eastern and contemporary electronic music. Touch, imagery, sound, and words combine as you delight in the tactile quality of the book and its contents, and the outlandish beauty of the erotic, historic atmosphere. It feels incredibly vivid, and - as you are asked to consider acts of censorship and self-censorship - the story ends up feeling very contemporary indeed." -Mark Atkin

Colored / Noire

An immersion into 1950s Alabama, at the heart of the civil rights struggle. In a specially designed setting, visitors equipped with augmented reality headsets and bone-conduction audio systems are transported to 1950s Alabama. This 32-minute award-winning immersive experience allows them to relive, as if they were there, the courageous act of Claudette Colvin -a 15-year-old girl who, nine months before Rosa Parks, refused to give up her seat on a bus. ✧ "Colored (Noire) is an augmented reality experience that, deservedly, has been called by many one of the best ever created in this technology. Combining exceptional theatrical quality, essential and highly polished writing, excellent directing, and a rarely seen level of technological execution, this work remains both an example and a model of how to use XR in a way that simultaneously builds emotional resonance and maintains high dramaturgical standards. Walking with spirits - or rather, phantoms of the past that overlay our physical bodies today - is the most powerful reminder that freedom and dignity should never be taken for granted." -Ana Brzezińska

AI & Me: The Confessional and AI Ego

‘AI & Me’ is an installation that explores the interaction between humans and artificial intelligence, focusing on judgment, perception, and our openness to machine analysis. Central to the experience is 'The Confessional,' where participants receive blunt AI opinions based on their appearance. 'AI Ego' extends this, showcasing participants "liked" by the machine in surreal, AI-generated scenarios. The installation challenges our comfort with technological judgment while prompting reflection on AI's broader societal implications.

Heartbreak and Magic

Drawing on Libby Heaney's grief over her sister’s sudden passing, Heartbreak and Magic explores the extra-dimensions of quantum physics as alternative narratives on how we think & feel about the self, life & death. This VR work invites you to connect deeply with your emotions by exploring the meaning of existence & unexpected loss. You can expect a shifting, multilayered story that evokes themes of cyclicity, liminality & the multiverse. Heaney developed the work through an iterative, experimental process involving both physical & digital forms of creativity: movement practice, writing, drawing & painting to bespoke quantum computing code & game engine prototyping. Heartbreak and Magic brings her experimentation with quantum computing into VR for the first time.
